What Is Gynecologic Cancer?
Gynecologic cancer starts in the female reproductive system. There are several types of gynecologic cancer, including:
Symptoms & Detection
The earlier your diagnosis, the better chance you have of recovery. Regular pelvic exams are important for catching gynecologic cancer in its first stages. Some common symptoms of gynecologic cancers are:
- Abnormal bleeding
- Bloating and abdominal pain
- Feeling full too quickly
- Pelvic pain
- Itching, burning, or pain in your pelvic area
Diagnosis
To learn the reason for your symptoms, your doctor may order tests such as:
- Biopsy – Removes a tissue sample from the suspicious area to examine it in a lab
- Colposcopy – Uses a special magnifying glass with a bright light to examine your vulva, vagina, or cervix
- Diagnostic imaging exam – Includes MRIs, X-rays, and ultrasounds, which show the inside of your body
- Endoscopy – Inserts a very small camera inside your pelvis so doctors can check for abnormal tissue
Treatment Options
If you receive a diagnosis of gynecologic cancer, your doctor will recommend a treatment plan based on the type, stage and location of your tumor. Some treatments commonly used for gynecologic cancer include:
- Chemotherapy
- Hormone therapy
- Immunotherapy
- Radiation therapy
- Surgery
- Targeted therapy
