What Are Urologic Cancers?
Urologic cancers affect the urinary tract and male reproductive system. Many different types of cancer fall under this umbrella, including:
Symptoms
Warning signs and symptoms of urologic cancer are different for each cancer. Your doctor may order tests to learn more if you experience:
- Blood in urine
- Frequent urination
- Pain in the testicles, penis, or lower back
- Swelling, discoloration, or bleeding of the testicles, penis, or pelvic area
These symptoms can also be caused by other, less serious conditions.
Diagnosis
If your doctor suspects urologic cancer, they may order tests such as:
- Biopsy – Your doctor removes a small tissue sample to check for cancer.
- Blood tests – These tests look for substances in your blood that may be signs of cancer.
- Cystoscopy or ureteroscopy – Doctors use a very small camera to see the inside of your urethra and bladder.
- Imaging – Images are often taken using X-ray, MRI, or CT scans to locate tumors.
Treatment
The Adventist HealthCare Cancer Centers and other cancer care providers have the technology, experience, and care you need. Your doctor will recommend a treatment plan based on the type of urologic cancer you have, how advanced your cancer is, and your overall health. Your care plan may include:
- Chemotherapy
- Hormone therapy
- Immunotherapy
- Varian™ Truebeam™ radiation therapy
- Surgery
- Targeted therapy
Because we partner with Maryland Oncology Hematology, you also have access to clinical trials. These research studies examine new treatments before they’re available to the general public.
